Rother joins global event celebrating diversity

A day aimed at celebrating diversity and challenging discrimination has been marked by Rother District Council.

The authority flew the rainbow flag at the Town Hall in Bexhill for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Representatives of the district council were joined by members of Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance to mark the event.

The global event, which highlights the issue of discrimination against people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), has been running since 2004.

The date of May 17 marks the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation stopped classifying homosexuality as a 'mental illness'.

Malcolm Johnston, Rother District Council executive director of resources, said: "We're always pleased to join communities around the world in marking this day to celebrate diversity and show our determination to challenge discrimination in any form."
