Question 09/17

Q. Why is it that the council do not have a Traffic Warden in Bexhill who can issue parking tickets to vehicles that are parked on Double Yellow Lines all over the town?? (03/04/2017)

A. Rother District Council does not have legal powers to enforce on-street parking restrictions or apply penalties to motorists who don't abide by the restrictions.

The parking laws are a matter for the police to enforce. Sussex Police have notified us that unless causing serious risk or harm they do not have resources to enforce parking restrictions on a day to day basis. East Sussex County Council as the Highways Authority are working on a study looking into the case for civil parking enforcement whereby restrictions are enforced by wardens working on behalf of the highways authority. The early stage of this business case is expected to be completed by July 2017. (04/04/2017)
